Come see us at the Saturday Community Market from 10:00-1:00. Located at the Community Garden in the Ghost Town, we're there every Saturday with happy vendors offering an array of locally produced goods and other items.
Fresh eggs, local art, handcrafted textile goods, goat milk soap, all natural lip balms and skin care products, essential oil perfumes, Zoey's leather goods, handcrafted, creative jewelry, including Kim's, many made with local stones, block printed textiles and vintage goods, both curated and upcycled, practical and artistic items made of reclaimed steel, Sandy's super cute pop-up shop and more -- you never know just what or who you'll find here. Indeed, lately, chess players have been meeting up for a game or two or three or...
We welcome new vendors. Flea market items are also welcome. After all, reusing and up-cycling already existing items is smart and green. We ask a $10 donation to the Community Garden to set up, helping us to continue to improve this space and experience for all of us. (A quick, easy and affordable online course can provide that).

TERLINGUA RANCH PROPERTY OWNERS’ POTLUCK: Please join your friends and neighbors at the monthly property owner potluck. The next potluck will be Thursday, April 4th at 6:00 pm in the Bunkhouse. INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY WEEK ‑‑ is coming up, April 2-8, 2024, closing out with a solar eclipse on April 8th! How will you be celebrating? We will be hosting a series of FREE events this week! Come join us in celebration of the Big Bend region's dark skies with stargazing activities led by staff from McDonald Observatory, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the National Park Service, and local volunteers.
April 3rd, Terlingua / Study Butte 8:00pm: Star Party at Canyon View Community Park (Baseball fields) Free star party this Wednesday! The weather forecast is looking great for that night. Come celebrate Terlingua's dark skies, and enjoy a guided tour of the constellations and lots of telescopes for close-up views of stars, galaxies, and more. Bring your own chairs or blankets.
Canyon View Community Park are the baseball fields next to the school.

April 6th, Alpine 1-4pm: Alpine Visitor Center, kid's and family activities, solar eclipse glasses available

We recommend bringing blankets or chairs to evening star party events. The solar eclipse will only be partial (~90% covered) for the Big Bend area. Safe eclipse glasses will be necessary to view it.

Our non-profit, the BBCA, was once again recipients of community service from the AWTY school from Houston.
The (140+-) 8th graders, teachers and advisors, sorted and cleaned up old junk, repaired our shade house, built berms and planted in the garden. Also, they helped clean the ball field and storage area and had some fun playing softball.

James BranchTaylor, Jr.
Jimmy was 91 on October 17, 2023, and passed away December 20, 2023, in Alpine, TX. He was born in Houston, Texas in 1932 to James Branch and Cosette Maud Taylor, both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sons James Garfield Taylor and Spencer Alba Taylor, and siblings Weldon Burns Taylor and Gwendolyn Taylor Gammill. He lived in Alpine with his wife of 42 years, Barbara Cole Taylor, they previously resided in Terlingua, TX for 17 years. Before that they lived in Marble Falls, Johnson City, Conroe, TX, also San Diego County CA. He is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Cynthia King of Stuart FL, and her children, Ashley Richardson Mann and her husband Bruce, also of Stuart and son David Andrew Richardson of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by son, Bryan Taylor of Montgomery, TX and his wife Andrea. Also surviving are children of his brother and sister.
Jimmy was a builder/contractor for most of his career, a trade he & Barbara loved so much and partnered in that it did not seem like work.
Jimmy was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Texas for 65 years.
He loved to fly, play golf and dominoes, and he loved his black labrador retrievers. His greatest hobby was being a part of the Chili Appreciation Society International. He served on their board of Directors for 10 years and actively worked at many chili cook-offs for over twenty years, helping to raise money for many charities.
A memorial will be held at a future date at the home of dear friends in Alpine, TX.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the CASI scholarship program, The American Diabetes Association or The Alzheimer’s Association.

John Wells, April 5, 1959 - January 10, 2024, passed away in hospice care in Fort Stockton, TX. After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, his decision was to not undergo treatment, but rather to enter hospice care mid-December, 2023. Details of his life can be found on his blog, The Field Lab, and in various publications: Texas Monthly magazine, the New York Times, and a video interview by the Texas Country Reporter.
He was very talented and creative: raised in New York state, he spent most of his career in New York City (Manhattan) as a fashion photographer and set designer. Then, around age 50, was drawn to the stark beauty of West Texas near Big Bend National Park, where he established The Field Lab to practice and document off-grid living.
He was a prolific tinkerer, blogger, an accomplished photographer, and talented electronic technician; perhaps eccentric would be an apt description. I enjoyed his blog, the descriptions of experiments, challenges, and successes. His stories made me wish I was living in West Texas!
Perhaps the best part of his solitary lifestyle near Terlingua was his relationship with God - John said he found God in the desert and it changed his life forever.
John is missed. His daily blog was full of surprises, stories, and antics. The good news is that his pain is now gone and he is in the presence of the Father. John, thank you for leaving a legacy for us to enjoy and learn from.

-Art is due by Tuesday, April 16.
You may submit art in any media, paintings, ceramics, photographs, jewelry and glass.
-There are several Dark Skies activities going on in Alpine during April.
-Let’s join in with a stunning art exhibit, celebrating our dark starlit skies of our Big Bend region. Art should represent the subject..
The reception will be a great presentation to the public and travelers to the Gallery.
